Protein Pills for Weight Gain


Protein can both help you lose weight and gain weight, which can sound counterintuitive, but that’s the reality. If someone wants to gain weight or muscle, in addition to the protein they’re getting from their diet, they may add protein powders or shakes to their routine. Protein pills, on the other hand, are not an good way to gain weight if that’s your goal, but they can help you increase your protein intake with minimal calories. 

Why Would Someone Want to Gain Weight?

For many people, wanting to gain weight seems like something they can’t understand. In reality, if you’re low body weight, your doctor may advise you to try to gain weight in healthy ways. If you’re trying to gain weight, go slowly. Rapid weight gain can be hard to maintain and dangerous. If you’re struggling to put on weight, you should also speak to your doctor because unexplained weight loss can signify a serious underlying condition requiring treatment. 

Protein is essential for everyone, regardless of their weight gain or weight loss goals, since it plays a role in growing and maintaining muscles. 

Foods like salmon and eggs are healthy sources of protein, and you can also add to your protein intake with shakes or powders. Protein shakes can be a relatively easy way to gain weight, and they may be an option for vegans or vegetarians who can’t otherwise get enough from their diet alone. 

Protein supplements are also available in bars and drinks. They can help with weight gain because they also have calories, but you want to avoid options with a lot of added sugar. 

Unexplained weight loss can stem from conditions like:

  • Medications
  • Previous stroke

These can be serious situations, so you need to work with your doctor on what you should eat and the right ways to gain weight


Another reason someone might be interested in adding protein to their diet to increase their weight is if they’re bulking. Bulking is a term often used by bodybuilders, and it refers to progressively increasing the calories you consume more than what’s actually needed by your body to go along with intense weight training. 

Bulking is a phase of bodybuilding, along with cutting and maintenance. When someone is bulking, they’re working to gain muscle, so they’re intentionally eating more calories than what their body needs. 

Once someone bulking figures out the number of calories they need, they can start determining ratios of macronutrients. Macronutrients are carbs, fats, and protein. During bulking, around 30-35% of calories come from protein. This could be a situation where someone might use protein powder to add to their daily targets. 

Protein and Weight Loss

While protein can be part of gaining weight healthily, it can also play a role in weight loss. Eating a high-protein diet can help you lose weight, and high protein intake boosts your metabolism and reduces your appetite. High-protein diets can also change hormones that regulate your weight, and protein can help you lose not only overall weight but also belly fat. 

Your brain significantly affects your weight. Your brain processes different information to determine what to eat and how much. Many of the most important signals that go to your brain are hormones. High protein intake can increase the levels of appetite-reducing hormones and reduce your levels of the hunger hormone, which is ghrelin. 

Once you eat, some calories are used to digest and metabolize your food, known as the food’s thermic effect. Protein tends to have a significantly higher thermic effect than fat and carbs. 

What About Protein Pills?

Protein pills are not the best option for someone who wants to gain weight or bulk. Protein pills are often made of collagen or amino acids. They are a way to increase your overall protein intake, but they don’t have a lot of added calories. If weight gain is your goal, you’re better off going with food sources of protein or higher-calorie protein supplements, like shakes. 

If you want to lose weight, adding protein pills into your routine may be helpful since they have few calories and no added ingredients in most cases.
