Tips for Getting Workout Clothes Clean and Fresh

It is nice to be physically active. However, there is one thing that makes us uncomfortable when working out: our gym clothes. Workout clothing can really smell, and worse, have yellow stains. 

This is partly because of the fabrics of the gym clothes. Its synthetic fibers trap the body soil, creating an odor problem. If you are experiencing this, do not worry. Here are some of the tips you can do to make your workout clothes clean and fresh again. 

Wash workout clothes as soon as possible.

It is hard for some to wash their workout clothes immediately. If there is something that keeps you from washing your workout clothes, you better have an appointment for laundry pickup. But before sending them to the laundry service, do not damp them in the laundry hamper. Ensure to hang them to prevent damping your clothes and inviting more odor-causing bacteria from growing. 

Soak sweaty workout clothes to remove sweat stains.

As our workout clothes are soaked in sweat, there are possibilities the body oils turn into sweat stains. You can break down the stain by presoaking your workout clothes for 30 minutes before washing. Do not throw them in the washer immediately, rinse and let the water drip for awhile.

Use cold water only and wash the workout inside-out.

Cold water helps maintain the breathability and longevity of your workout clothes. Do not use hot water; it makes the synthetic fibers shrink. 

Wash your workout clothes inside-out, as the soil and odor-causing bacteria are all inside the clothes. It is a way to remove sweat, body oils, and dirt. Moreover, washing your clothes on the outside easily fades them. 

It is a good habit to follow the recommended amount of detergent. However, there is an exception when washing workout clothes. Only use the recommended detergent. Excess detergent can build up in the fabrics.

Workout clothes are hard to rinse because of their moisture-wicking fabric. Hence, only use about half of the detergent to make it easier to clean, rinse, and become less likely to retain odors.

Do not use fabric softener.

Workout clothes use synthetic fabrics, and using a fabric conditioner does more harm than good. It leaves behind coats that trap more odor and degrades the performance of the fabrics. If you need a fabric softener, add half a cup of white vinegar to your wash cycle. It helps kill offensive odors.

Air dry workout clothes.

Some might use the dryer because it is quick. However, the heat from the dryer breaks down the performance fabric and flexibility; it even alters the shape of your workout clothes. Hence, air drying your workout clothes is the key to having optimal performance and long wear.
